Karst Services
During
its long history of providing high-quality service to its clients,
PELA has developed an internationally recognized reputation for
karst studies. Dr. Philip E. LaMoreaux, founder of PELA, is
one of the early karst authorities of the modern era. In the 1950's
the Alabama Geological Survey conducted
formative studies on sinkhole occurrence and karstic groundwater
flow under his direction.
PELA continues to advance the science of karst studies through its
sponsorship and organization of the highly successful series of
Multidisciplinary Conferences on Sinkholes and the Engineering and
Environmental Impacts of Karst™. The conference series Proceedings
volumes edited by Dr. Barry F. Beck, former director of
Florida Sinkhole Research Institute and current Vice-president for
Karst of PELA and Chief-of-Operations of PELA's office in Oak Ridge,
Tennessee, have become standard references on environmental geology
and engineering geology in karst settings
